Time does fly. Such a cliche but so true. August is here and you know what that means - the Back to School Frenzy followed by Halloween, etc. It seems that summer just began but it is really almost over. Boohoo. I like summers, even in Florida. I still play tennis every day. I also rest more
after a morning game, not only because of the heat, but, just like all of us, I'm not getting any younger.
The latest offering available in my various POD's - Bella, a
beautiful Tortoiseshell Cat. I captured this shot after many tries. My goal was to get her gorgeous eyes opened and looking straight ahead. I also wanted her whiskers to show up well. Of course, her thick, colorful, mottled coat and bushy tail were important. I love her nose and the dark-light split on her face. If you have been reading my newsletters you have seen other pictures of her. Her left ear is almost half cut off. She is a rescue and probably part of a TNR
(Trap/Neuter/Return) group . They put a notch in one ear to show that they have been neutered/spayed and returned to their cat colony or wherever they were found. Someone was notch happy with her. In this photo I decided to restore her ear so she is seen in all her glory. Click the image for purchasing details.
Red and Bella are getting along great except when Red has the zoomies (cat parents know what that is). She tolerates his antics most of the time. Sometimes I intervene
and admonish him. Here they are in a clip from a video that shows how well they are doing. You can see her notched ear also.
Here they are doing their favorite activity. Snoozing.
Continuing with this series of showing the history of some paintings. So far we have explored Cats and Flowers, Meowjongg - Cats Playing Mahjongg, Jazz Trio, Jazzy Cats and CAT Scan. If you have a favorite you would like to know more about just contact me (you can use the mail icon at the bottom).
Anatomy of a Painting
Cats and Koi
This painting was inspired by my beautiful long haired Tuxedo Cat, Skeeter. I miss him always. He died not long after we got Red.
I love to paint the back view of a cat. The shape is so beautiful, especially with Skeeter and his long hair, bushy tail and striking color pattern.
I thought of showing him looking down so I could show his back and side.
I decided to give him a cat family to look at. Then I thought about adding a Koi Pond for color and rocks to help give perspective from the cat's location above and leading down
to the pond.
The beginning stages were made of defining the shapes and perspective of the composition. The rocks needed a lot of overlapping shapes and shadows in the right location to make them look
like they were descending down to the pond from the cat's view.
Here I was beginning to work out the colors and continuing defining the shapes of the rocks. There were more painting sessions than I will show here as the work took about four months. I
will just show the most significant changes.
Adding color to the rocks was very time consuming.
After adding most of the rock colors and shadings i decided that some should be under the surface.
As the painting developed I wasn't happy with the right side and decided to add more rocks and close up the design of the pond.
This photo has some glare on out nut you can see all the changers to the water and submerged rocks. Lots of color adjustments and tweaking.
After many more painting sessions at some point i decided to add the little waterfall on the top left. Also defined the Koi and waterlily pads. Color and shadings were intensified all
over.
This is the finished painting after lots of work on details and color. It is available on prints and on products. Click on the image for
