Hi to new subscribers! It has been a while since
my last newsletter in December. Now that the holiday frenzy is over and spring is almost here it's time for my flea remedy advice. I do this every spring in the hope that it will spare your furry friends the misery of flea sprays, dips, baths and the rest. This is meant for cats although I imagine small dogs would be good candidates as well.
You only need a flea comb, a container for water tall enough to immerse the comb, liquid dishwasher detergent and a few paper towels. Q-tips also come in handy. Fill the container with water and add a few drops of detergent. Stir gently because you don't want a lot of suds. Gently comb your cat. This works very well if your cat is relaxed and on your lap. Talking softly and assuringly helps. When you snag a flea get the comb in the
water quickly and shake slightly to help it fall off. Use the paper towel or q-tip to wipe the comb and repeat until you no longer find fleas.
Years ago I tried flea baths, sprays and various treatments and swore I would never do it again after seeing my beloved Mollie petrified and foaming at the mouth. I
pass this along in the hope that I can spare some pets the horror when there is a gentler, kinder way. I have also used Seresto flea collars and they worked fine on indoor/outdoor cats. I have heard some cat owners say they are harmful to some cats but mine didn't have a problem. My recent and current cats are indoor only cats and fleas are not a problem although I have heard that even indoor cats can get fleas brought in on clothing, etc. I have been fortunate. I think
some cats are prone to them. Luckily, Red and Bella don’t have any problems with fleas even though she has long fine hair and he has very thick and fluffy long hair.
Bella and Red just chillin on top of the piano.
Red is a Ringtail cat. Of course, I never heard of that before. I thought his tail was broken. Then I found a facebook
group about American Ringtail Cats. I wish I knew his background but he was found on the street and taken in by a rescue group. I found him through Petfinders.com.
Last issue I talked about the new series I am
working on from photos I took on Safari a few years ago. I've done two so far and showed the first, "Lioness and Cubs" in all it's stages of development. I had just begun "Elephant and Calf below and I have just a sketch so far of the third, Giraffe and Calf. Interesting that baby elephants, zebras and giraffes are all called calves. I have many of these photos available for sale on prints and products in my POD shops. I wanted to also capture some as oil paintings on canvas. I thought you would
enjoy seeing the photo reference alongside the painting.
So far in this segment of showing the history of
some paintings we have explored Cats and Flowers, Meowjongg - Cats Playing Mahjongg, Jazz Trio, Jazzy Cats, CAT Scan, Cats and Koi, The Cat Cafe and Lioness and cubs. If you have a favorite you would like to see featured just contact me.
Anatomy of a Painting

Inspiration can come from many sources. In this case I had a photo I took of our Tuxedo Cat, Skeeter. We were having our bedroom floor redone with porcelain tile. The bags of grout and stacks of tiles were on the patio outside the bedroom door. Of course,
Skeeter climbed on top of the bags and watched everything. I haunted Home Depot for reference material. I would line up the bags and other stuff and take photos at different angles. They must have thought I was some crazy lady. I guess I am. A crazy cat lady.
First come the questions about how you will lay it all out. The composition is the biggest decision at this point. I have changed my mind about compositions many times and it makes things
much more difficult. I left room here for other elements I had in mind but wanted to delevop the painting a bit before I added more. I wsn't sure about the colors yet.
Even though you have a sketch, the lettering and small details can get lost as you apply paint. You really have to go back and forth and wait for parts to dry.
I had an idea of some of the colors I would be using but not the background. I went with the default of the actual colors on the bags while thinking about the cat's hat and background wall and floor.
Now some other elements were added which gave some pops of color. This gave me an idea for the wall. Since it was concrete I gave it a heavy texture and a deep rust color with variations of
shadows and light. I could have used the actual color that's in the photo but I wanted something to set off the cat and bags. I felt it needed a deep, rich amber color.
So far my title was "Cat at Work" but when I added the
buckets.....
The "Cat at Work" became "The Cat Crew". I knew I had to fill the buckets and floor with his "crew".
The lettering and logos took forever and I probably spent a few months on getting to this point of development.
Now the cats and kittens had to be refined as well as the lettering and colors
all over. I couldn't decide what to do with his hat.
You can see the many logos and patterns on the bags. The folds and shadows were a challenge. I must have unconciously known I had to leave space in the lower right hand corner for the Tuxedo
kitten looking up at the others.
Still kept changing my mind about the cat's hat and his ears.
There were many stages in between these examples. Most of it was sharpening the details and refining the colors. I finally settled on the hat and ears and added "Purrveyor".
